Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power fell 4-3 to the Delmarva Shorebirds at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday night. The Power tied the game twice late, but could not stave off four errors and a ninth inning Shorebirds run in the defeat.
West Virginia held a 1-0 lead after one inning when David Rubinstein scored on a double by Aaron Baker. The lead was short-lived, though, as Justin Dalles hit his third home run of the season in the second to give Delmarva a 2-1 edge.
Jesus Brito hit a one-out solo home run to left field in the bottom of the second inning to tie the game against Bobby Bundy. It was Brito's eighth of the season and the club's 56th of the year, second-most in the South Atlantic League.
The Shorebirds recaptured the lead in the sixth when Power starter Kyle McPherson walked Garabez Rosa with the bases loaded.
In the West Virginia eighth, Evan Chambers reached on a single to start the inning and scored on a two-base hit by Jarek Cunningham. Rubinstein attempted to sacrifice Cunningham to third, but Dalles, the Delmarva catcher, opted to throw to third to take Cunningham off the bases. After Rubinstein stole second, Baker reached on a base hit and Power manager Gary Green sent Rubinstein home. A strong throw from Mikey Planeta in center eat Rubinstein to the plate for the second out. With Baker at second, Jose Hernandez popped out to end the inning.
Delmarva scored a run against reliever Mike Williams in the ninth on a base hit, a sac bunt, and a West Virginia error.
Williams (1-1) took the loss, while reliever Tom Phelps gained the win. James Brandhorst picked up the final out for his third save. Baker had the lone multi-hit game for West Virginia, and Rubinstein saw his 12 game hitting streak come to a close. Mike Mooney and Planeta had two hits apiece in the Delmarva win.
The Power and Shorebirds continue this five-game series Wednesday night at 7:05 pm. Jason Erickson will make the start for West Virginia against Delmarva's Luis Noel.
