June 29, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
The skid has hit five games for the Kannapolis Intimidators as for the third straight game, they allow greater than ten hits in a 6-3 loss to the Asheville Tourists in the first of a five game series in Asheville, NC.
Off starter and 11th overall selection in the 2009 draft Tyler Matzek, the Intimidators (1-5) grabbed a lead in the first inning as the leadoff hitter Daniel Wagner doubled to start the game and he was brought home on a double by Ian Gac to take a 1-0 lead.
The game would stay at 1-0 behind a strong first four innings by Cameron Bayne and Matzek would settle down after his first inning, but in the fifth the game changed. In the bottom of the fifth, Jared Clark, the six-hitter led off with a single, followed by a double, a single and another single, allowed three runs to score on four straight hits to the bottom four of the lineup. He would recover to get the top three in order to leave the inning behind just two at 3-1.
ASHEVILLE, NC - In the sixth, with two on as Matzek walked back-to-back hitters, Brady Shoemaker lined into an unlucky double play, making it a man on first with two down. In that situation, Nick Ciolli sent a massive blast well over the wall in right field to tie the game at three. Matzek exited after 5.2 allowing five hits and three runs with seven strikeouts.
Again off Bayne (6-7), he got a strikeout to start the sixth but Angelys Nina singled, followed by a single and an error and a two run double by Jose Gonzalez to score two runs. Gonzalez would then score on a double by Joey Wong to make it a 6-3 score in the bottom of the sixth. Bayne exited allowing ten hits and six runs.
For the Tourists (5-1) the bullpen came in and struck out a combined five in 3.1 between Leuris Gomez (3-2), Rhett Ballard and Sheng-An Kuo, who picked up his eighth save of the season. Garrett Johnson, Brandon Kloess, who left the game with a pulled muscle in his rib-cage, and JR Ballinger threw 2.1 scoreless in relief.
The Intimidators have allowed 53 hits in three games and 36 runs, and have lost five straight, they look to reverse the trend on Wednesday with Justin Collop seeking his fifth win of the season, he will be opposed by Jose Gonzalez, seeking his fourth at 7:05 at Historic McCormick Field.
