Hagerstown Suns News Release

The Hagerstown Suns (2-4, 38-38) took a shutout into the ninth inning, but two runs by the Lakewood BlueClaws (4-1, 46-29) gave the home team a 2-1 victory.

Paul Demny got the start for the Suns and was brilliant through seven scoreless frames. The right-hander allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out five and left with a 1-0 lead though he did not factor into the decision.

The 1-0 lead was thanks to a solo home run by first baseman Justin Bloxom in the top of the second inning. The homer was Bloxom's sixth of the season and came off Lakewood starter Brody Colvin.

Colvin was solid through six and two-thirds innings, allowing just the one run on four hits and one walk. The right-hander struck out five Suns and he too did not get a decision in the game.

The score stayed 1-0 through Rob Wort's nervy bottom of the eighth inning. Wort, in relief of Demny, surrendered a walk and a one-out single before right fielder Leandro Castro popped out to second baseman Jeff Kobernus. The pop-up induced the infield fly rule, but Kobernus dropped the ball allowing the runners to advance. With two outs, Wort then intentionally walked first baseman Jonathan Singleton to face catcher Sebatian Valle.

The gamble paid off, as Wort got Valle to pop out in foul territory to third baseman Steven Souza, keeping the score 1-0 going into the ninth inning.

The Suns were retired 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth by Lakewood reliever Eric Massingham (2-1).

In the bottom of the ninth, the Suns called on closer Dean Weaver (1-2), but the normally lights-out right hander struggled. The first batter he faced, left fielder Brian Gump, tripled to right-center field.

Weaver retired second baseman Jeremy Barnes on a soft line drive to shortstop Francisco Soriano, but third baseman Adam Buschini followed with a double down the left-field line to tie the game at 1-1.

Designated Hitter Anthony Hewitt popped out to Steven Souza for the second out of the inning, but center fielder Jiwan James singled to center, driving in Buschini and giving the BlueClaws the 2-1 win.

Weaver took the loss, allowing two runs in two-thirds of an inning. Massingham earned the win with his one inning of scoreless work.

The Suns and BlueClaws will play the second game of their five-game series at FirstEnergy Park on Wednesday at 11:05 AM.
