Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
Zac Fuesser and Albert Campos traded zeros over the first four innings for the Power and Tourists, respectively. Asheville managed two hits against Fuesser, while Campos held West Virginia hitless until the fifth inning.
In the top of the fifth, the Tourists scored four runs on five hits against Power reliever Trent Stevenson. Avery Barnes singled to start the inning and scored on a base hit by Brett Tanos. The next two batters reached on base hits, and with two outs Dustin Garneau tripled in Bryce Massanari for Asheville's final run and a 4-0 lead.
West Virginia ended the no hitter when Dan Grovatt tripled off Campos with one out in the bottom of the fifth, and broke up the shutout when the Power outfielder scored on a past ball. West Virginia's second run plated in the seventh in the same fashion when Grovatt doubled, moved to third on a ground out, and scored on another past ball.
The Power rallied in the ninth to load the bases with no one out when Matt Curry and Eric Avila each walked and Grovatt reached on a bunt single. Tourists' reliever Juan Perez retired Elias Diaz on strikes for the first out. Justin Howard followed with a ground ball to second base. Asheville attempted to turn a double play and was successful in getting Grovatt out at second, but could not complete the double play. Grovatt, though, was ruled to have interfered with shortstop Cristhian Adames throw to first and the game ended on the interference call.
Stevenson (0-2) took the loss for West Virginia, while Campos (1-1) gained the win and Perez earned his first save of the season. Grovatt collected three of the Power's five hits, while Barnes and Kyle Parker had two hits apiece for the Tourists, who took three out of four in the series. After meeting 12 times during the 2010 campaign, West Virginia and Asheville have already concluded their season series with these four games.
The Power take to the road for the first time this season when they start a nine-game, two-city trek on Friday. West Virginia plays at Augusta starting at 7:35 Friday night and travels to Kannapolis for a series that starts on Tuesday. The Power return home on April 25 to host the Hagerstown Suns.
