Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
West Virginia held a 1-0 lead after two innings when Mel Rojas Jr. scored on a error, and led 2-0 after four when Matt Curry cross homed on a Justin Howard sac fly that barely left the infield.
Asheville halved the deficit when Dustin Garneau hit a solo home run off Zack Von Rosenberg in the top of the fifth, and took the lead 3-2 with two runs against Power reliever Brooks Pounders in the sixth.
The Power would answer quickly, though, with two runs in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead for good. Curry tripled in Eric Avila to tie the game and took the lead on a single by Howard. The final two runs were plated in the eighth on Howard's first home run of the season; a two-run home run to right that capped the scoring at 6-3.
Von Rosenberg struck out nine over five innings but did not factor in the decision. Pounders (1-0) pitched two innings for the win, while Ryan Beckman tossed two innings of one-hit ball for his second save in as many chances. Tourists' reliever Josh Mueller took the loss after surrendering both runs in the Power half of the sixth inning.
Curry and Howard had three hits each, while Howard matched the team high for the season with four runs batted in. West Virginia amassed 11 hits in the game and took advantage of three Asheville errors. Garneau had three hits, all for extra bases, to pace the Tourists' offense, and Rafael Ortega stole four bases in four chances.
Game three of this series will be Wednesday at 7:05 pm. Gates will open at 6:00 pm, and West Virginia will send Brandon Cumpton to the mound against Asheville's .
