HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads scored six times in the bottom of the fourth inning to upend the Gnats 6-1 Tuesday night at LP Frans Stadium in Hickory, NC. The Gnats have now dropped four games in a row, and have scored just three runs in their last four games.
Opening Night at Historic Grayson Stadium is this Friday, April 15 with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 PM. Fireworks will follow the game. There will be music and special kids entertainment on the newly expanded Plaza.
The Gnats (2-3) took their first lead of their four-game skid in the top of the third inning. With one out, LF Alonzo Harris doubled and then came home an out later on a Sam Honeck single to left field to give the Gnats a 1-0 lead. Harris entered the game in the middle of the first inning after starting centerfielder Darrell Ceciliani was removed. Honeck has now hit safely in four of the Gnats' first five games.
Gnats starter Gonzalez Germen forced Hickory (4-2) to leave the bases loaded in the second inning, but couldn't escape trouble in the fourth. Hickory sent 12 men to the plate and scored six runs on four hits and five walks against Germen and reliever Josh Edgin to take a 6-1 lead. Edgin did not retire any of the four batters he faced. LHP Chase Huchingson relieved Edgin with the bases loaded and struck out Hickory's Odubel Herrera to end the frame. Huchingson pitched very well in his 4.1 innings of relief, yielding just two hits, while fanning five without issuing a walk.
The Gnats will send RHP Greg Peavey (1-0, 0.00) to the mound Wednesday in an 11 AM start against Hickory RHP Randol Rojas (1-0, 1.80). Catch all of the action streaming live on sandgnats.com.
