STAT OF THE NIGHT: Manny Machado has already been intentionally walked twice this year. The last Shorebirds player to be intentionally walked more than twice was Ron Welty, who drew three in 2009.
PREVIEW: The Shorebirds aim to level the series at one game apiece in game two against Kannapolis. The Intimidators plated runs in the seventh and eighth innings to defeat the Shorebirds 5-3. The Shorebirds outhit the Intimidators 12-6 in the losing effort. Manny Machado led the offense with a 3-for-4 night. The Shorebirds have not suffered consecutive losses this season. Both of their losses have come by a final score of 5-3.
SCHUTZ LEADS THE LEAGUE: In three games played, outfielder Kipp Schutz leads the South Atlantic League with a .571 batting average (8-14). He also ranks tied for the third in the circuit in RBIs with seven, third in the league in doubles with four and second in the league in on-base percentage (.600).
GOOD START FOR MACHADO: The Orioles first round selection ranks sixth in the league in batting average (.467). He has hit safely in four of the five games. He leads the league in walks (7) and on-base percentage (.636).
THE SECOND INNING: The Shorebirds have scored ten runs in the second inning through five games this season. They have plated a run in the second inning in four straight games. The Shorebirds have scored only one run in the first inning this season.
159 OF 162: Of the 162 at-bats this season, 159 have come against right-handed pitchers. The only left-handed pitcher that the Shorebirds have faced is Dayton Grant, in the eighth inning of game one.
PITCHING STAFF SUCCESS: The Shorebirds pitching staff ranks third in the league with a 2.35 ERA. In 46.0 total innings, the staff has allowed only 34 hits and 12 earned runs. The Shorebirds have 44 strikeouts to 18 walks.
16 HITS IN LAST TWO: The Shorebirds offense has produced 16 hits over the last two games. They had 14 against Greensboro on Sunday and 12 against Kannapolis on Monday. The Shorebirds rank third in the league in total hits behind Charleston and Greenville.
