Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Rome, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets used effective pitching and back-to-back fifth inning home runs to drive a 5-3 win over the Rome Braves on Tuesday night.
For the first time all season, the GreenJackets struck first in a game, doing so with two runs in the third inning. Raynor Campbell tripled home the first run of the game and then scored on Adam Duvall's RBI single to make it a 2-0 game.
In the fifth, Duvall and Josh Mazzola became the first GreenJackets to hit back-to-back home runs to extend the Augusta lead to four. Mazzola drove in three as part of a three-hit night while Duvall drove in a pair.
Rome rallied to within a run in fifth inning. Keenan Wiley's RBI single brought home a run, followed by Matt Lipka's RBI groundout and Elmer Reyes' run-scoring single. That would be as close as the Braves got, with Mazzola's RBI single in the seventh pushing the lead to two runs.
Justin Schumer (1-1) survived the rough fifth inning to fire six strong innings and record the first win by a GreenJackets starter all season. Schumer allowed three runs - all unearned - on five hits while retiring the side in order twice. It was the first time all year the GreenJackets didn't surrender a first inning run. The bullpen dazzled to preserve the lead, with Jacob Dunnington striking out four in two scoreless innings of one-hit ball while Drew Bowlin struck out the side in a 1-2-3 ninth to get his first save of the season.
Carlos Perez (0-1) took the loss for the Braves, allowing four runs on six hits in five innings of work with five strikeouts for Rome.
Mario Rodriguez (0-0) takes the ball for Augusta on Wednesday afternoon to face Caleb Brewer in a matinee start for the third game of the series. First pitch will come at 1:05 with the pregame action beginning at 12:50 on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
The GreenJackets play their home opener on Friday April 15th at 7:35 p.m. against the West Virginia Power. Single-game and Season Tickets are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS while further information can be found online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
