Hagerstown Suns News Release
Lexington, KY- The Hagerstown Suns (5-0) stayed on their road trip hot roll as Game 1 against the Lexington Legends (2-3) at Whitaker Bank Ballpark went in favor of the visiting club by a score of 5-1. The clubs were supposed to play in a doubleheader after yesterday's contest was rained out, but rainfall today made the playing surface unplayable, so one nine-inning game was scheduled for 7:05pm. Hagerstown put up crooked numbers early as they scored two runs in each of the first two frames. Aggressive basestealing helped the Suns in the 1st inning when a double steal by LF Randolph Oduber and 2B Adrian Sanchez, who both singled, resulted in a throwing error by Legends C Roberto Pena. The airmailed delivery to third base brought home Oduber, before Suns C David Freitas pushed a groundball to the right side scoring Sanchez to give the Suns a 2-0 lead.
In the away half of the 2nd inning, Sanchez, who had a 2-for-4, 3 RBI evening, ripped a 2-run single back up the middle to score 1B Brett Newsome, who walked, and CF Michael Taylor, who reached on a fielder's choice. Suns RHP Taylor Jordan (2-0), the winning pitcher, made his first start of the season and pitched 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing just two base hits, walking one, and striking out five. Suns starting pitchers have allowed just three earned runs in 26.0 innings of duty through five games in 2011. His opposition, Legends RHP Juan Minaya (0-1), the losing pitcher of record, gave up four runs, three of them earned in 5.0 innings of work, while walking a trio and fanning six.
The Suns added another run of insurance in the top of the 7th inning before stretch time when Sanchez drilled a ball into the ground towards second base, allowing Taylor, who reached on an error, to score. The Legends only run came in the last of the 7th stanza when LF Bryce Lane laced an RBI double down the line in left field to score CF Daniel Adamson, who had a 3-for-4 night at the plate, including a double and triple, and fell one hit shy (a home run) of the cycle. Hagerstown RHP Shane McCatty, who went 2.0 innings and surrendered one earned run on two hits, while walking one and striking out three, would strand two Legends in scoring position by inducing a groundout off the bat of Lexington 2B Delino DeShields, Jr.
Suns LHP Chris Manno slammed the door shut on any comeback hopes for the Legends as he tossed 2.0 shuout innings out of the bullpen, giving up just one hit, and striking out the side in the bottom of 9th to seal the fifth consecutive victory for Hagerstown.
