Lake County Captains News Release

(Eastlake, OH)--West Virginia's Michael Brantley had a two-run double and catcher Angel Salome added a solo homer Friday night as the West Virginia Power defeated the Lake County Captains 5-3 at Classic Park.

The Power (29-23) have won five straight games to pull to within striking distance of first-place Delmarva and Lexington.

The Captains (24-30) have dropped the first two games of the West Virginia series and three straight overall.

Lake County jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Mike Conroy's eighth homer of the season, a solo shot to center off lefty Steve Garrison (1-0).

That was the only run Garrison allowed in 6 2/3 innings. He allowed only three hits, with three walks and three strikeouts.

Salome, a Northern Division all-star candidate, slugged a solo shot to center in the fourth off Tom Cowley to tie the game 1-1. It was Salome's seventh of the year and his 42nd RBI, which ranks third in the league.

West Virginia took the lead 2-1 in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Lorenzo Cain.

Cowley (0-2) left after five innings, trailing 2-1. He walked one and struck out four.

The Power broke the game open in with three in the seventh against righthander Dustin Roddy to extend the lead to 5-1.

Lake County rallied for two runs in the ninth on an RBi single by Andy Lytle and a sacrifice fly by Conroy, but Dane Renkert recorded the final out on a groundout by pinch-hitter Matt Fornasiere to seal the win.

The Captains were held to six hits in the game, and stranded six runners.

In Saturday's game at 2:05 P.M., righthander Frank Herrmann will start for the Captains against West Virginia lefty Rafael Lluberes. The first 2,000 fans will receive a free Captains t-shirt courtesy of Lake Hospital System.
