Greenville Drive News Release
Kannapolis, NC - Greenville Manager Luis Alicea wasn't going to be denied of his 100th career victory Thursday night as the Drive opened up their four-game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators winning 7-2. Starting pitcher Michael Bowden tossed 5.0 solid innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven to pick up his first victory in his last five starts. The win improved the Drive to 27-26 on the season.
Kannapolis struck first by scoring in the bottom of the first thanks to a shaky start by Bowden. Brandon Johnson hit a one-out double to left and advanced a batter later on a ground out. A wild pitch by Bowden allowed him to score the Intimidators first run.
The Drive would answer back in the top of the second with three runs to take the lead. With the bases loaded Jay Johnson and newly acquired Dominic Ramos hit back-to-back singles to score all of Greenville's runs for the inning. Tony Granadillo scored on Johnson's hit, and Chris Turner and Christian Lara scored on Ramos'.
The Intimidators would cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom half of the second, but that would be the closest they would get. With one out, Anderson Gomes doubled off Bowden to right and would score as Brandon Allen, the very next batter, singled to right-center.
Greenville would answer right back in the top of the third for two runs on one hit and two Kannapolis errors. Mark Wagner and Granadillo each led off the inning by reaching on by faulty defense. Back-to-back walks issued to Mike Leonard and Turner allowed the first run to score. Lara then collected the Drive's only hit of the inning to plate their second run, scoring Granadillo.
After three and a half scoreless innings, the Drive added two more runs in the top of the seventh. Once again Wagner led off the inning by reaching base on an error before Granadillo singled to center. After a passed ball allowed Wagner to advance to third, he scored on a one-out single by Leonard. Turner then followed with a sacrifice fly to knock in Granadillo.
Drive relievers Tim Cox and Ismael Casillas combined to toss four scoreless innings. Cox pitched the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings allowing just two hits while striking out three. Casillas tossed the ninth allowing a hit and a walk, while striking out one.
The Drive return home on Monday, June 5th when they begin a four-game series with the Charleston RiverDogs, affiliate of the New York Yankees. First pitch is set for 7:05 PM at West End Field as Greenville will send left-hander Michael Rozier to the mound.
