LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Phillies rookie pitcher and 2003 Lakewood BlueClaws hurler, Cole Hamels made a rehab appearance in Lakewood and fans can own a piece of history from this very special night. Hamels' jersey and cap, both game worn, have been autographed and will be auctioned off separately during the remainder of the homestand.
Fans can bid on these items anytime during the homestand or during business hours in the ClawsCove Store at FirstEnergy Park. Regular office hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.
"This is a definite piece of BlueClaws history," Geoff Brown, Lakewood BlueClaws General Manager said. "No Cole Hamels or BlueClaws fan should miss out on this opportunity."
Funds generated from the auction will benefit the Grand Slam We Care Foundation, the charitable arm of the Lakewood BlueClaws. The foundation uses funds to provide tickets to underprivileged youth in the Monmouth and Ocean County.
During his rehab start on June 1, Hamels was brilliant. The southpaw, making his first start in front of the Lakewood crowd for the first time since 2003, did not disappoint. Hamels went 5.2 innings scattering 3 hits and giving up a run while walking two. When exiting the game the fans showed there respect by giving Hamels a much deserved standing ovation.
The BlueClaws and Crawdads continue there weekend series here in Lakewood Friday night with at 7:05 p.m. with a post game fireworks presented by Toyota World and Scion world of Lakewood. The homestand continues through next Thursday, June 8. Following Hickory the Delmarva Shorebirds come to town for a five game series including a double header on June 6th. In 2005, the Lakewood BlueClaws were the recipients of Baseball America's Bob Freitas award for overall excellence in Minor League Baseball.
