RiverDogs Filet Catfish, 5-4, Win Second Straight
June 2, 2006 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
Charleston, SC -- Charleston closer Cory Stuart got Columbus third baseman Russ Mitchell to fly out to the warning track in left field with the bases loaded and two outs in the ninth inning to preserve an exciting 5-4 RiverDogs victory over the Catfish in South Atlantic League action Friday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.
Leading by a run with two outs in the ninth, the RiverDogs decided to intentionally walk the league's leading RBI producer Sergio Pedroza to load the bases for Mitchell, who drove a Stuart pitch deep to left.
Charleston left fielder Tim Battle, who had misplayed a hit by Brandon Carter into an RBI double earlier in the inning, hauled in the catch a couple of steps in front of the fence to end the game.
With the win, the RiverDogs move above the .500 mark overall at 28-27, and take their second straight in the series from the visiting Catfish. Columbus drops into a tie with Charleston at 28-27, as they fell to the RiverDogs for only the third time in 11 meetings between the teams this season.
Charleston earned the victory despite being out-hit 13-8 by the visiting Catfish, who stranded eight base runners and hit into two double plays.
The RiverDogs built an early 3-0 lead, scoring two runs in the first and another in the third against Columbus starter James McDonald (1-3). Austin Jackson began each inning with a double, and scored in the first on a single by Marcos Vechionacci, then in the third on one of three McDonald wild pitches.
Columbus scored two unearned runs against Charleston starter Jason Stephens (3-1) in the fourth with two outs, as Lucas May drove a two-run double down the left field line following a Vechionacci error and a David Sutherland single, cutting the deficit to 3-2.
After Battle drove in a run in the Charleston half of the fourth on a ground out, the Catfish again pulled back within a single tally when Carter scored on Mario Holmann's throwing error.
The RiverDogs went ahead 5-3 in the bottom of the fifth when Ben Jones lined a ground rule double to right plating Jackson, who had walked, with two out. That score held until the ninth, when Stuart allowed consecutive one-out singles to May and Juan Apodaca.
Carter then looped the ball in front of Battle in left, who attempted to make a diving catch, but instead allowed it to roll past him scoring May and leaving runners at second and third.
After Ivan DeJesus grounded to second base with the infield in, Charleston manager Bill Mosiello decided to intentionally walk Pedroza, who has ten RBI in 11 games against the RiverDogs this season.
Jackson reached base four times for Charleston, going 2-2 with a walk and a hit by pitch, and scored three times in a game for the second time in the series. Jones drove in two runs, while Eduardo Nunez also picked up a pair of hits.
The finale of the four-game series is scheduled for 7:05 pm Saturday, with a pair of left-handers slated to match up: Charleston's Wilkins Arias (2-3, 4.81 ERA) and Columbus' Marlon Arias (5-3, 4.77 ERA).
