RiverDogs to host Hall of Famer Saturday night
June 2, 2006 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
Although it doesn't invoke the memories and traditions of Cooperstown and the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the National Toy Hall of Fame in Rochester, New York is the hallowed home to 34 of the most popular toys of all time. On Saturday night the Charleston RiverDogs will pay homage to the newest inductee, the cardboard box, member of the class of 2005.
The RiverDogs have partnered with Azalea Moving and Storage to give free cardboard boxes to the first 1,000 fans through the gates on Saturday night. The origins of the cardboard box date back to ancient China and the 1600s.
The first efficient cardboard was produced by American Robert Gair in 1879. Over the years, children sensed the possibilities inherent in cardboard boxes, recycling them into innumerable playthings. Shoe boxes serve as ideal settings for scenes and dioramas. Small boxes take on alternate roles as dollhouse furniture. Wheels drawn on the side turn a box into a car. Really large boxes-from washers, stoves, big-screen TVs, or refrigerators-can offer children even greater opportunity for creativity.
"As with any Hall of Famer, we have put our full efforts into an evening to honor the accomplishments and stature earned by the cardboard box" said RiverDogs promotions director Jim Pfander. "Regarded as an overshadowed member of the toy culture, I was personally happy for the cardboard box when I heard it had made it to the Toy Hall of Fame last year" Pfander added.
In addition to the giveaway boxes, the RiverDogs will construct a cardboard box castle in the Kid's Zone. Children in attendance will be invited to play in the castle free of charge.
Boxes ranging from shoe box to refrigerator size will be dispersed to the crowd on Saturday night. The gates open at 6:00 with the first pitch between the RiverDogs and Columbus Catfish set for 7:05.
