Suns hire dog as radio broadcaster
June 2, 2006 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns annual "Dog Days of Summer" promotion will feature an exciting new twist this season as a Jack Russell Terrier has signed a professional contract to join the Suns radio broadcast during the game. The promotion will be held on Sunday, June 4th when the Suns take on the Lexington Legends at 1:35 pm.
"Zoe" will make her professional broadcasting debut during the game on 1410am WHAG from the Suns Municipal Stadium pressbox. Her contract expires after just one game, but she did receive a lucrative signing bonus of 7.4 dog biscuits. It's believed that her ground-breaking broadcast will be the first dog broadcast ever of any professional sporting event.
The Suns annually invite all dogs and their owners to the ballpark once each year. A number of fun events will take place during the game including:
Dog/Owner Look-alike Contest
Pre-Game Dog Parade
Best Trick Competition
Best Bark Competition
"I think our fans will be surprised by Zoe's knowledge of Suns baseball and her unique Home Run call," said Suns Manager of Media Relations, Jason Gordon. "Who better to share the radio booth with than man's best friend," Gordon added.
The Dog Days of Summer promotion is presented by Park Circle Animal Hospital & the Smithsburg Veterinary Clinic. Each dog owner will be asked to sign a waiver before entering Municipal Stadium. Suns staff members will have water bowls ready inside Municipal Stadium.
The Suns are the single-A affiliate of the New York Mets and are owned by Los Angeles based Mandalay Baseball Properties. For more information, or to purchase tickets, contact the Suns at 301.791.6266 or visit online at www.hagerstownsuns.com.
