Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Savannah rallied to tie the game at 2-2 in the eighth inning, but an RBI double in the ninth doomed the Sand Gnats in their 3-2 loss to the Rome Braves Friday night at Historic Grayson Stadium.

After being held scoreless through the first seven frames, the Gnats broke through in the bottom of the eighth to load the bases for Brian Peacock, who worked a one-out walk to push across Alex Nunez, getting Savannah on the board. With the bases still loaded, Edgardo Baez delivered a chopper to first base, and an errant throw allowed Francisco Plasencia to slide in safely at home to knot the score.

Rome scored the winning run in the top of the ninth when Elvys Andrus put a two-run double into right field, scoring Jordan Schafer from second to set the score at the 3-2 final.

Gnats pitcher David Trahan worked a quality start, allowing just one run in six innings while scattering seven hits. Trahan struck out three in the no decision. Juan de los Santos came on out of the bullpen in the seventh and fanned five batters in two innings of shutout relief. Jamie Lehman was tagged with the loss, giving up one run on two hits in one inning of work.

Edgardo Baez extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a single up the middle in the first. The streak is the longest for any Sand Gnat this season and ties him for sixth longest in the South Atlantic League.

On defense for Savannah, Dee Brown made a spectacular play in left field to prevent a two-run homer in the top of the sixth when he reached over the wall to rob Derrick Arnold and turned around to double off Cody Clark at first

The Gnats and Braves play Game 3 of the series Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Savannah is scheduled to pitch right-hander Carlos Martinez (1-2, 6.19) against Rome lefty Jo Jo Reyes (6-0, 2.47). Saturday is Service Organization Night with a beach towel giveaway to the first 1,000 fans, presented by Hargray Communications Group.
