HIGHLIGHTS: The West Virginia Power beat the Savannah Sand Gnats 9-2 at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday night. Jose Hernandez and Bengie Gonzalez drove in three runs each to back a solid pitching performance for the Power.
West Virginia scored two on a home run by Jose Hernandez to open the game against Darin Gorski. A triple from Jairo Marquez and double by Bengie Gonzalez brought the score to 4-0 after four innings. The Power added three runs in the fifth keyed run-scoring base hits by Kyle Morgan and Gonzalez to create a 7-0 lead.
After four shutout innings, Brett Lorin relieved Eliecer Navarro and added three scoreless frames of his own. Navarro struck out three while walking one during his time on the hill. Lorin struck out four of the first six batters he faced and pitched into the eighth during his longest South Atlantic League appearance of the year.
The Sand Gnats broke up the shutout in the eighth, sending Alonzo Harris and Pedro Zapata across the plate. Harris was hit by a pitch and scored on a Zapata triple, while the second run scored on a ground out. West Virginia tacked on two more runs in the home half of the inning on three hits, including a Jarek Cunningham triple.
Lorin (1-0) picked up the win for the Power. Gorski (3-5) took the loss for the Savannah, which lost its third straight game. Four players from West Virginia had multi-hit games, led by Hernandez with three. Two of the Sand Gnats four hits came off the bat of Zapata. The Power and Sand Gnats continue this four-game set Wednesday evening at 7:05 pm. Kyle McPherson and Taylor Whitenton will start for West Virginia and Savannah, respectively.
