LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Jimmy Paredes went 4-for-5 with four RBI, and Jose Ramirez authored 6.0 excellent innings in a 7-4 Charleston victory over the Lakewood BlueClaws in South Atlantic League action at FirstEnergy Park Tuesday evening.
The RiverDogs improve to 12-13, 43-51 overall, while Lakewood drops to 15-9, 57-37 overall.
Lakewood received a leadoff walk from Jiwan James in the first, who then moved to third on an errant pickoff throw. After an Alan Schoenberger walk, Stephen Batts grounded into a double play that scored James for a 1-0 lead against Ramirez (4-4).
The Dominican native would not allow another run, as the 20-year-old hummed 6.0 innings of three-hit ball, with three walks and eight punchouts. It marked the first road win for Ramirez since July 21, 2009.
Kelvin Castro and Slade Heathcott both singled in the fifth against Lakewood's Josh Zeid, and Paredes stroked a two-out, two-run double to give Charleston a 2-1 lead.
Charleston knocked Zeid out of the game in the fifth, loading the bases with one out on three straight singles. Castro's sacrifice fly increased the RiverDogs lead to 3-1.
Zeid (5-4) gave up three runs in 5.1 innings on a season-high nine hits with six strikeouts.
A four-run seventh inning for the RiverDogs - all coming with two outs -- upped the lead to 7-1, as Francisco Santana contributed a two-run double, and Paredes added a two-run single.
Lakewood inched closer with a three-run eighth against Ben Watkins, notching a RBI single from Sebastian Valle and a two-run double from Jeremy Barnes, but Ryan Flannery came on for Charleston and halted the rally by getting the final out of the frame.
The Carlstadt, N.J. native also fanned the side in the ninth to collect his 12th save, which is tied for fifth in the league.
Paredes' third four-hit game of the campaign paced the RiverDogs 16-hit attack, while Kyle Higashioka registered his second straight three-hit game, and Heathcott and Rob Lyerly had two hits each.
Game two of the series, set for Wednesday at 7:05 p.m., features Charleston right-hander Brett Marshall (1-1, 3.27 ERA) tossing against Lakewood right-hander Brody Colvin (5-6, 3.67 ERA).
