Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Craig Clark fired six scoreless innings and the Augusta GreenJackets provided just enough offense for a 2-1 victory that serves as the 1,400th win in the minor league career of manager Dave Machemer on Tuesday night against the Greensboro Grasshoppers.
Ryan Cavan's solo home run in the first inning and a fifth inning throwing error by Grasshoppers catcher Carlos Paulino provided all the scoring Augusta would need. Ryan Lollis came home from third on the error to provide the second and final Jackets run of the night. Clark (2-1) was sterling during his six shutout frames, striking out six and walking two while allowing just four hits.
Four relievers combined to shut the `Hoppers down after Clark's departure, combining to strike out four in three innings. Jose Casilla had a tough situation in the ninth to close the win after three errors put men at second and third with one out. Pinch-hitter Chad Creeger hit a dribbler to second that yielded the second out but brought home the only `Hoppers run and pushed the tying run to third. After a walk put men on the corners for Greensboro, Casilla got Kyle Skipworth to strike out for the fifth time of the night to preserve the one-run win. Casilla earned his eighth save of the year in the process.
Edgar Olmos (2-3) threw five solid innings for the Grasshoppers, allowing just two runs - one earned - on five hits and two walks while striking out five in the loss. Offensively, the Hoppers were just 1-16 at the plate with runners in scoring position and stranded 12 men on the basepaths.
Machemer has been a minor league manager and scout for nearly 25 years with four different organizations and is currently in his second year with the GreenJackets and sixth year with the San Francisco Giants organization. He is a native of Benton Harbor, Michigan.
The GreenJackets look to win their third straight on Wednesday, sending Andy Reichard (1-0, 4.00) to the mound against Robert Morey (0-1, 3.86). First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com.
