Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
LAKEWOOD, NJ - The BlueClaws offense struggled for a third straight game, as Lakewood dropped the opener of a four game series with the Charleston RiverDogs (Yankees) 7-4.
Lakewood (15-9) was held to just one run in a doubleheader against the Intimidators on Sunday, and have scored just 16 runs in their last six home games.
This is just the second time this season that the Claws have dropped three games in a row.
Charleston (12-13) starter Jose Ramirez (4-4) limited the BlueClaws to just three hits and an unearned run through six, striking out eight. Ryan Flannery picked up his 12th save in relief.
The BlueClaws took the lead in the first thanks in large part to a Charleston error. Jiwan James walked, and advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw by catcher JR Murphy. He then came home on a 4-6-3 double play ground out by Stephen Batts.
BlueClaws starter Josh Zeid (5-4) held the lead until the fifth, when Jimmy Paredes doubled in two runs to put Charleston up 2-1.
The RiverDogs added a run in the sixth on a sacrifice-fly by Kelvin Castro, and put four unearned runs on the board in the eighth to push their lead to 7-1.
Zeid went 5 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits and three runs in his fifth start of the season.
The BlueClaws made a game of it in the eighth. Sebastian Valle singled in a runner, and a two-run Jeremy Barnes double cut the deficit to 7-4. That however would be as close as the Claws would get.
Wednesday night (7:05 pm) RHP Brody Colvin (5-6, 3.67) goes toe to toe with RiverDogs RHP Brett Marshall (1-1, 2.86).
