Bridgeport Islanders News Release

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (April 6, 2012) - Kevin Poulin stopped 33 of 34 shots and David Ullstrom scored twice as the Sound Tigers won their seventh straight game with a 3-1 victory over the Syracuse Crunch on Friday night at Webster Bank Arena. With the win, the Sound Tigers improve to 39-24-3-6 overall. The Crunch falls to 34-28-5-5.

The Sound Tigers took the lead at the 13:29 mark of the opening period with the first of two power play goals. Rhett Rakhshani held the puck in the left circle of the Crunch zone, then sent a centering pass to Tony Romano who deflected it past Iiro Tarkki for his third goal in four games to put the Sound Tigers up 1-0.

Ullstrom's first goal of the night pushed the lead to two at the 19:25 mark of the first period. Tarkki made the initial save on a point shot from Calvin de Haan, but Ullstrom put the rebound in for the Sound Tigers second power play tally of the period. Syracuse outshot the Sound Tigers 11-5 in the first period, but Poulin's stellar play made the difference as Bridgeport held a 2-0 lead.

Pat Maroon scored midway through the second period on the power play to cut the Syracuse deficit to one. After Poulin made one of many highlight reel saves on the night, Maroon found the rebound to cut the Sound Tigers lead to 2-1 at 8:22 of the middle frame. Ullstrom regained the two-goal advantage for the Sound Tigers late in the second period. After Steve Oleksy forced a turnover in the Crunch zone, Ullstrom beat Tarkki from the slot. It marked the 24th goal of the season for number 24, and the Sound Tigers led 3-1 after two periods.

Poulin continued to stymie the Crunch in the final period. Syracuse outshot the Sound Tigers 13-7 in the final period, but Poulin's spectacular play kept the Crunch off the scoreboard, preserving the 3-1 win for the Sound Tigers.

The Sound Tigers have won seven straight games on this eight-game homestand, and Kevin Poulin has been in net for all seven victories. His record improves to 24-17-4 overall. The Sound Tigers are now 24-8-2-2 at home this season.

Bridgeport will look to close out its homestand a perfect 8-for-8 tomorrow night when they host the Providence Bruins at 7:00 p.m.
