Albany Devils News Release

GLENS FALLS, N.Y. -- Despite playing ahead after two period, the Albany Devils relinquished a one-goal lead in the third period, falling to the Adirondack Phantoms, 3-2, Friday at the Glens Falls Civic Center. The Phantoms, winners of the season series, claimed the Time Warner Cable Cup thanks in part to three power-play goals.

The loss moves the Devils to 30-31-6-5, while the Phantoms improve to 35-32-2-2.

Albany led 2-1 heading into the third, but Matthew Ford tied the score with a wrist shot over Keith Kinkaid's glove at 7:06. The with nearly six minutes remaining, Denis Hamel gave the Phantoms the lead, scoring on a back-door play at 13:38. Adirondack finished the night 3-for-9 with the man advantage.

"We just have to bounce back," said head coach Rick Kowalsky. "I have no problem with how we played tonight even with the penalties. We didn't want to give up three, but I thought their power play did a good job of getting pucks through. The last one was a couple failed attempts to clear the puck when we could have gotten it down 200 feet and couldn't get fresh legs out there. They took advantage of it."

The Devils played shorthanded to start of the game, playing approximately six of the first nine minutes a man down. The Phantoms capitalized on their second of three man advantages as Cullen Eddy pounced on a rebound at 7:03.

Albany responded minutes later when a cutting Steve Zalewski redirected a centering pass by Mattias Tedenby at 10:07. The goal, which was also assisted by Matt Taormina, was Zalewski's team-leading 18th of the season.

Kory Nagy gave the Devils a 2-1 lead 5:32 into the second period. Moments before his career-high fourth goal, he was tripped inside the Phantoms zone. As Kinkaid head to the bench on a delayed penalty, Jay Leach fired a shot that ricocheted off J.S. Berube and onto Nagy's stick for a one-touch score.

"Our mentality heading into the third was good," Nagy said. "Everyone was up and we came into the third with a lead. Guys were talking and spirits were high. I don't know, we came out a little flat in the third and didn't get the calls."

The Devils entered the final period with a 20-3-2-1 record when leading after two, but the Phantoms response extended Albany's winless streak at the Glens Falls Civic Center to seven games.

"The bounces sometimes don't go your way," Nagy said. "You just have to keep battling and working. It's always a grind in this building when we see these guys. We have to keep fighting through it."

In goal, Keith Kinkaid made 29 stops on 32 shots in his 41st appearance of the season. At the far end, Michael Leighton earned the victory with 32 saves on 34 tries. He wasn't credited with a save when Eric Gelinas struck the post with less than 30 seconds to play.

These two teams will meet for the 10th time when the Devils host the Phantoms for a 7 p.m. contest Saturday at the Times Union Center. The game is part of "Fan Appreciation Night" with prizes being awarded to fans throughout the evening.
