HARTFORD, CT - The Manchester Monarchs earned a point in the standings as they fell to the Connecticut Whale, 2-1 in overtime, at the XL Center on Friday night.

Manchester (36-31-2-3) ranks second in the Atlantic Division with 77 points. Connecticut (35-24-7-5) is in second place in the Northeast Division with 82 points.

"We could have won this game on a clear cut breakaway on the power play in the third period," said Monarch Head Coach Mark Morris. "It was an even game and our team played hard. (Martin) Jones was solid in net."

Center Casey Wellman scored his 23rd goal of the season at 1:16 of the overtime period to give the Whale the victory. Wellman carried the puck through the neutral zone and bobbled it twice as he attempted to cross over into the Monarchs zone as Manchester put on pressure. Wellman regained control of the puck and passed it over to defenseman Brandon Bell who was entering the Monarchs zone at the right point. Bell received the pass and returned the favor as he found Wellman open between the hash marks. The center picked up the pass and beat Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones on his glove side. Defenseman Wade Redden also picked up an assist on the game-winning goal.

The Whale hopped on the scoreboard first when left wing Ryan Bourque netted his sixth tally of the season at 9:52 of the first period. Right wing Andreas Thuresson picked up a pass from center Jordan Owens at the center point of the Monarchs zone. Thuresson carried the puck over to the top inside corner of the right face-off circle before firing a slap shot toward the net. Bourque was positioned in the slot to redirect the puck up and over Jones to give the Whale a 1-0 advantage.

Rookie right wing Linden Vey tied the game up at 1-1 with his 18th tally of the season at 12:23 of the opening frame. Monarchs defenseman Nick Deslauriers sent the puck behind the Whale's cage. Right wing Brandon Kozun picked up the loose puck and fed a pass out to Vey who was positioned at the left hash mark. Vey one-timed the puck past Connecticut goaltender Chad Johnson's glove to tie the game.

Jones (16-17-1) took his 17th loss of the season, the first in overtime, stopping 29-of-31 shots. Johnson (22-17-5) earned his 22nd win of the season making 32 saves on 33 shots.

Manchester went 0-for-1 on the power play. Connecticut was 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
