Norfolk Admirals News Release

PORTLAND, Maine - The Admirals led Friday night's game at Cross Insurance Arena for nearly all sixty minutes before suffering a late marker and overtime dagger to lose by a 2-1 margin.

The game got off to a slow start, with the scoreboard staying at zero until halfway through the second period. In a tremendous individual effort, Louis Leblanc stole the puck from a Portland skater in front of the goal mouth and fired a quick shot on net past goaltender Mike McKenna's stick-side. The unassisted tally at 11:22 gave the Admirals a rare 1-0 lead.

With just 1:17 left to play in regulation and McKenna pulled for an extra attacker, Portland spoiled the shutout. Deep in the Admirals' end, Henrik Samuelsson snapped a pass behind the net to Alexandre Bolduc below the goal line. Bolduc quickly shuffled the puck to Tyler Gaudet in the crease, and Gaudet deflected it past LaBarbera. Gaudet's marker tied the contest at 1-1 and sent the teams to overtime.

The momentum stayed with the Pirates, and 2:28 into the extra frame, Portland sealed it. From his own zone, Jordan Szwarz skated 2-on-2 with Joel Hanley into Norfolk's end. At the hash marks, Szwarz dropped a pass for defenseman Dylan Reese, who wristed the game-winner into the top left corner for the Pirates 2-1 victory.

McKenna turned aside 30 of the Admirals' 31 shots, and LaBarbera fended off 23 of the 25 he faced. Neither team converted on the power play, with Portland going 0-for-5 and Norfolk scoreless on one opportunity.

Three Stars:

1) POR #2 Dylan Reese (GWG)

2) POR #56 Mike McKenna (30 saves)

3) NOR #1 Jason LaBarbera (23 saves)

NOTES ... Louis Leblanc's goal was his first since December 30 at Hershey ... This is the 20th-straight game that the Admirals have had at least 25 shots on goal, and the seventh-straight that they have outshot their opponent ... It was Rocco Carzo's first game as an Admiral after signing a PTO earlier today ... Portland's 12 shots through two periods were the fewest Norfolk has allowed through two since November 1 ... This was the fifth time in the last seven games against Portland that the two teams have gone to overtime.
