Albany Devils News Release

Portland, Maine - The Portland Pirates (7-3-0-0) avenged Friday night's shutout by handing the Lowell Lock Monsters (6-5-0-0) a 2-1 defeat at the Cumberland County Civic Center on Saturday night. The Pirates held the Monsters to just 16 shots in the game, one night after suffering a 4-0 defeat by Lowell.

G Vitaly Kolesnik got into the game with a couple of early glove saves, including a sparkling snag on a Curtis Glencross shorthanded breakaway that preserved the scoreless tie. But it wouldn't last, as Portland went on a 13-0 run in shots and took the advantage later in the period. Dustin Penner lifted home a rebound from the low slot to make it 1-0 Pirates at 13:13 of the first. It was Kolesnik's first goal allowed in over 108 consecutive minutes, dating back three starts to October 30th against Binghamton. Lowell took a season-low three shots in the frame.

Portland extended the lead late in the second. A turnover by Lowell in their defensive zone led to a scoring opportunity. And when Glencross gathered in a loose puck in the bottom of the left circle, he buried it for his third of the campaign. But with three seconds remaining in the period, Lowell got on the board. David Gove sent Craig Adams in alone on a breakaway after Adams was freed from the penalty box. He slipped in his fourth of the season between Gregg Naumenko's legs to cut the deficit to one, despite a 24-9 shot lead for the Pirates.

The goal seemed to wake up the Monsters for the third, as they came out with intensity in a tightly defended third period. A couple of goalmouth scrambles yielded early scoring opportunities for Lowell, while Portland was held without a third period shot for over 11 minutes the start the period. The Monsters allowed only three third period shots by the Pirates, but could not get the equalizer. Johnny Boychuk's shot from the right point with four seconds left nearly snuck through Naumenko, but he held on to preserve the 2-1 victory. It was the sixth time in nine starts that Kolesnik has allowed two or less goals, but he had his four-game winning streak snapped with the loss.

On Sunday the Lock Monsters play host to the Norfolk Admirals at 4:05 p.m. The first 500 kids 12 and under will get a free Lock Monsters autograph book.
