Binghamton Senators News Release
Binghamton, NY - Denis Hamel picked up two goals while Brandon Bochenski and Charlie Stephens each netted one, but the Senators were unable to pick up two points in the standings on Saturday night as they fell to the visiting Rochester Americans 5-4 in a shootout.
Gregory Campbell kicked off the scoring for the Amerks 2:11 into the first period he beat Binghamton goaltender Billy Thompson for a short-handed tally and the 1-0 lead. Campbell lost his footing but was able to slide the puck past Thompson on his way down to the ice.
Hamel's first goal of the night, coming on the power-play, tied the game at one a piece 10:33 into the opening frame. Steve Martins picked up the assist on the tally.
Rochester took the lead back less than two minutes later thanks to a point shot by Nathan Paetsch that changed directions in mid-air after hitting Chris Thorburn in front of the net. Thorburn was credited with the goal while Paetsch and Jiri Novotny picked up the helpers.
The Amerks added to their lead only 12 seconds into the middle stanza thanks to a Stefan Meyer goal with the lone assist going to Rob Globke.
The Sens took a step to climb back into the game when Hamel picked up his second tally of the contest at the 5:14 mark of the second. Lance Ward picked up an assist and Martins recorded his second of the evening.
A little over two minutes later the Amerks gave themselves a two-goal lead once again when Clarke MacArthur notched his second goal of the season. Campbell picked up his second point of the game with the assist on MacArthur's goal.
In the closing minutes of the second period, the Sens offense came to life once again. In a matter of nine seconds, Brandon Bochenski and Charlie Stephens each recorded his first goal of the year. Tonight marked Bochenski's first game since being sent down from Ottawa. Both Stephens and Bochenski finished the night with two points.
After a scoreless third period and a five-minute overtime period the game would be decided by a shootout.
Novotny, Jason Pominville and Michael Ryan scored on the Amerks first three shots and the Sens were unable to recover, losing the shootout 3-2. Jeff Heerema and Patrick Eaves scored for the Sens.
Thompson made the start in net for the Sens and allowed four goals on 24 shots before he was relived of duty after 27:48 of action. Rookie Kelly Guard came into the game and stopped all 17 shots he faced in his 37:12 of game time.
Binghamton was 1 for 6 on the power play while the Amerks, the AHL's number one power-play unit coming into the game, picked up two goals on their eight chances.
