Phantoms fall to Penguins

Adirondack Phantoms News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - The spirit of the rivalry between the Philadelphia Phantoms and the Wilkes-Barre/ Scranton Penguins didn't take long to show its colors. In fact, it didn't even require a faceoff, as the two clubs threatened a brawl with a center ice ballyhoo during warm-ups. After all was said and done, the Phantoms spiraled to their sixth straight loss and the Penguins went to 10-1 with a 4-1 win.
Just 1:24 in, Philly's Josh Gratton and AHL thorn Dennis Bonvie dropped the mitts and the game was off to the races. The Penguins, fresh from their first loss of the season, scored shortly after the fight, with Daniel Carcillo nabbing his fourth of the campaign at 1:47.
The Phantoms countered at 13:14 of the first, as rookie defenseman Alexandre Picard shelved his second as a pro. While teams skated 4-4, Picard stopped a Penguins clearing effort at the left boards and went directly at Marc-Andre Fleury. Once the backstop dropped to his knees, Picard went upstairs to tie the game.
The score remained knotted until the second, as the home team made good with two power play tallies and one at even strength. All three goals originated at the blue line, as the goal that made it 2-1 deflected off a Phantoms defender. Starter Jamie Storr had no chance, as Noah Welch was given credit at 2:32. Penguin Matt Hussey tipped the next goal in at 9:10, while Stephen Dixon's marker spelled the end of the night for Storr, as the seeing-eye goal caught the post behind him and the traffic in front celebrated at 13:49.
Storr gave way to Beauchemin after stopping 10 of 14. The Phantoms were outshot in the second 9-2, but actually came back to outgun the Pens 25-19.
The game featured three fights, with Riley Cote and David Koci scrapping in the second and Triston Grant disposing of Welch in the third. The scraps, however, did not lead to a change in the Phantoms momentum.
"It's upsetting when you have those guys battling out there like that and we don't respond. That's got to change," remarked assistant coach Craig Berube. "I think we need to compete more. We need everyone to start caring a lot more about winning and losing and that's the bottom line."
The clubs are back at it on Sunday at the Wachovia Spectrum with a special faceoff time of 4:05 pm. All kids tickets for all Phantoms games are just $8. To purchase, go to phantomshockey.com and click tickets. To charge by phone, call (215) 336-2000, (856) 338-9000 or (302) 984-2000.
