Portland Shut out in First Game of Series in Binghamton

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Portland Sea Dogs were shutout, 9-0 by the Binghamton Rumble Ponies in the first game of the series tonight at Mirabito Stadium. The Sea Dogs drop to 47-29 and fall out of first place. They are now 1.0 game behind the first place Somerset Patriots. The Rumble Ponies improve to 32-44.

Jose Butto was awarded the victory tossing 6.0 shutout innings allowing five hits while walking one and striking out four. Brayan Bello was given his first loss of the season pitching 5.2 innings allowing four runs on six hits while walking two and striking out five.

Devlin Granberg finished the night with two of the five hits by the Sea Dogs reaching base with two singles and recording his fourth stolen base of the season.

The Rumble Ponies scored their first run in the bottom of the second inning. Luis Carpio hit a groundball to the first baseman, Tyreque Reed, who committed a fielding error. Carpio then advanced to third on two wild pitches from Bello. Nick Meyer then hit a sacrifice fly to left field and Binghamton led, 1-0.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Carlos Cortes led-off with a single to left field then moved to second when Brett Baty drew a walk. Yoel Romero then doubled down the left-field line. Cortes came home to score, but Pedro Castellanos committed a fielding error picking up the baseball and Baty scored on the error. Romero came home to score on a sacrifice fly by Jake Mangum and the Sea Dogs continued to trial, 4-0.

Binghamton struck again in the bottom of the eighth inning. Three-straight singles by the Rumble Ponies drove home one run and put runners at second and third. Romero then scored on a wild pitch by Dominic LoBrutto. Jake Mangum hit a bloop RBI single to right field and Carlos Rincon was able to score the third run of the inning. Matt Winaker then drew a walk and loaded the bases. Cortes drove a two-run double down the left field line, extending Binghamton's lead, 9-0.

The Sea Dogs and Rumble Ponies will meet for a doubleheader tomorrow, August 4th beginning at 5:35pm. The doubleheader is to make up for a game that was postponed from June 19th due to inclement weather. RHP Chris Murphy will be making his Double-A debut for Portland in game one while RHP Frank German (3-5, 4.97 ERA) will start game two. Binghamton will send RHP Connor Grey (1-0, 2.45 ERA) to the mound for game one and RHP Dustin Beggs (0-0, 4.91 ERA) will pitch game two.
