Ponies Blank Sea Dogs in Series Opener

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Rumble Ponies (32-44) used strong pitching from starter Jose Butto and a late offensive outburst en-route to a 9-0 victory over the Portland Sea Dogs (47-29) in the series opener at Mirabito Stadium.

In the second inning, the Ponies would get a single from Luis Carpio before a walk and a wild pitch moved him into scoring position for a Nick Meyer sacrifice fly.

The Ponies started the sixth with Carlos Cortes reaching on a single and Brett Baty on a walk. The next batter, Yoel Romero, hit an RBI double to left, scoring Cortes and an error by LF Pedro Castellanos allowed Baty to score from first to make it 3-0. Romero would finish 2-3 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Later in the inning, Jake Mangum hit a sacrifice fly to score Romero to put the Ponies on top 4-0.

Binghamton would bat around in the eighth inning sending ten hitters to the plate. The Ponies would score five runs courtesy of RBI singles from Carlos Rincon and Mangum, a 2-run double from Carlos Cortes, and a wild pitch.

Jose Butto earned his first win in a Ponies uniform going 6 scoreless innings allowing 5 hits and striking out 4. Sea Dogs starter Bryan Bello earned the loss going 5.2 innings allowing 4 runs while striking out 5.

Allan Winans pitched two scoreless innings in relief and Eric Orze pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the game.

The Rumble Ponies will continue their season-long 13-game homestand as they face the Sea Dogs Wednesday night for a doubleheader with first pitch at 5:35 PM ET.

POSTGAME NOTES: Carlos Cortes went 3-5 with 2 RBI...Carlos Rincon was 2-4 with an RBI...Mangum had 2 RBI...The Ponies were 5-9 with runners in scoring position...The Rumble Ponies bullpen has now pitched 22 straight scoreless innings dating back to their last series in Hartford.
