August 3, 2021 - Eastern League (EL)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Baserunning mistakes in extra innings spoiled the RubberDucks' comeback during Tuesday night's series opener against Altoona as the Curve outlasted Akron, 5-4 in 12 innings as Union Home Mortgage welcomed fans back home to Canal Park.
Turning Point
Altoona finally broke through in the top of the 12th when Ji-hwan Bae bounced a four-hop single through the left side of the infield to the bring home Cal Mitchell and deliver the Curve the final 5-4 lead.
Mound Presence
Adam Scott was magnificent in his start for Akron Tuesday night, keeping Altoona's bats silent through the first five frames. In total Scott tossed five hitless innings, striking out five Curve batters and issuing only two walks on 64 total pitches. DaKody Clemmer did not fare as well in his relief effort, allowing three runs on four hits and a hit by pith before even recording an out during his inning of work. Jake Miednik followed and kept the Ducks in the ballgame by tossing three scoreless, striking out three. The hard-luck loss was awarded to Thomas Ponticelli as he allowed two unearned runs, two hits and three walks while striking out three in three innings of work to finish the game.
Duck Tales & Notebook
Akron would crack the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when Steven Kwan came across to score on an Andruw Monasterio fielder's choice to make it 1-0 RubberDucks early. In the sixth inning, Bryan Lavastida singled home Will Benson to cut the Curve lead to 3-2. Kwan was the hero once again, tying the game in the bottom of the eight with a solo home run to right field that traveled 363 feet with a 102 mph exit velocity. After going down a run in the top of the tenth, Akron would tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the 10th when Jose Fermin scored on a misplayed Will Benson popup in shallow centerfield. Despite starting with a runner on second base with nobody out in both the 11th and 12th innings, Akron could not convert any scoring opportunities. The RubberDucks left seven on base and were 2-for-10 with RISP.
With tonight's loss in twelve innings, Akron's extra inning record goes to 6-3 ... Will Benson's two steals in the sixth inning mark the first time this season a RubberDuck has stolen multiple bases in a game ... Steven Kwan's single in the fourth inning extended his hitting streak to seven games, and hitting safely in 21 of the past 24 games ... Time 3:33 ... Attendance: 3,084
