RED SOX NAME WINNERS OF MONTHLY MINOR LEAGUE AWARDS FOR JUNE
The Boston Red Sox have named their minor league monthly award winners for June. Director of Player Development Ben Cherington made the announcements.
Offensive Player of the Month - Single-A Greenville third baseman Andrew Pinckney
Pitcher of the Month - Double-A Portland lefthander Jon Lester
Defensive Player of the Month - Single-A Greenville outfielder Bret LeVier
Quality Plate Appearances Award - Double-A Portland/Triple-A Pawtucket infielder Dustin Pedroia
Base Runner of the Month - Triple-A Pawtucket outfielder Chip Ambres
Base Stealer of the Month - Single-A Wilmington outfielder Bryan Pritz
Latin Pitcher of the Month - Dominican Summer League righthander Emilis Guerrero
PAPELBON NAMED EASTERN LEAGUE PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Portland Sea Dogs right-handed pitcher Jon Papelbon has been named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 27-July 3. Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM) made the selection.
Papelbon made one start during the week, tossing six innings of no-hit ball against the Norwich Navigators in game one of a doubleheader on July 2. In route to the win, Papelbon struck out ten and allowed just two base runners, one on a walk and another reaching on an error. Papelbon was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket the following day. Earlier in the week he had been named an Eastern League All-Star.
Papelbon, a 24-year old from Jacksonville, Florida appeared in 14 games with the Sea Dogs in 2005, Papelbon posted a 5-2 record with a 2.48 ERA (2nd in the Eastern League).
The Boston Red Sox selected Papelbon in the fourth round of the 2003 draft. He enters the 2005 season rated as the #3 prospect in the Red Sox organization and the #91 prospect in all of minor league baseball by Baseball America. He is also rated by Baseball America as possessing the best fastball and slider in the Red Sox minor league system. He was named the Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Year for Single-A Sarasota in 2004
Papelbon is expected to make his first Triple-A start on Thursday. He becomes the second Sea Dogs pitcher this season to earn Eastern League Pitcher of the Week honors. David Pauley was awarded the honor for the week of May 30-June 5.
FORMER SEA DOG KEVIN HOOPER GETS CALL TO THE BIG LEAGUES
Former Sea Dogs infielder Kevin Hooper was called up to the Major Leagues on Tuesday by the Detroit Tigers. He is the 113th Sea Dog to play in the majors.
Hooper played for the Sea Dogs in 2001. He hit .308 over 117 games. Recorded 144 hits, 70 runs, 19 doubles, 6 triples, 2 home runs, and 39 RBI
