July 6, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
Connecticut Defenders News Release
(Norwich, Conn.) -- A day after taking 10 walks from Rock Cats pitchers, the Navigators let their bats do the talking tonight. Norwich ripped 15 hits and batted around twice in scoring 10 times and hanging on to defeat the Rock Cats, 10-6, at Dodd Stadium tonight.
The Navigators broke on top in the 4th inning, batting around and scoring four runs on three hits and three walks after two were out, with the highlight a bases-loaded, two-run single by Kevin Frandsen. The RBIs were the first with Norwich for Frandsen, who made his Norwich debut yesterday after being promoted from San Jose (A). Norwich batted around again in the 5th inning, scoring four more runs on five hits and a walk. Carlos Valderrama's opposite field two-run homer started the rally. It was Valderrama's fifth homer of the season. The Navs tacked on two more in the 6th to take a 10-0 lead before the Rock Cats made it interesting with a six-run 7th. But Billy Sadler and Brian Wilson shut the door the rest of the way to preserve the 10-6 victory.
Starter Brian Burres (6-3) bounced back nicely from a couple of rough outings against Portland, tossing 5.1 shutout innings on just four singles, while striking out a season-high seven. Burres picked up his team-best sixth win of the season. New Britain starter John Thomas (5-3)was tagged for nine hits, four walks and seven earned runs in 4+ innings and took the loss. Fred Lewis and Julio Cordido had two hits apiece for the Navigators and Lewis and Tim Hutting both reached base four times in the game.
The Navigators will try to take three out of four from the Rock Cats when they play the finale of their four-game series with New Britain tomorrow night. Lefty Brian Mazone will take the hill for Norwich and he will be opposed by New Britain lefty Errol Simonitsch. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
