Chesapeake Baysox News Release

BOWIE, Md. - Local baseball fans longing for a "Beltway Series" between the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Nationals got a sneak peak of such a match-up at Prince George's Stadium.

Orioles pitcher Erik Bedard took the mound for the Baysox tonight in his first action since landing on the Disabled List in late May with a sprained left knee. He was opposed by the Nationals' Zach Day, who made his second rehab start for the Harrisburg Senators.

Day and the Senators came out on top in this particular duel, taking a 4-2 victory from the Baysox on Wednesday.

Bedard (0-1) pitched two innings, allowing a pair of runs on two hits with a walk and four strikeouts. He started the game by retiring the first three batters, all on a called third strike.

The Baysox followed Bedard's strong start by scoring a run off Day in the bottom of the first. Peter Bergeron led off the inning with a single to center. Brandon Fahey sacrificed him to second, and Bergeron advanced to third on a Tripper Johnson single. Bergeron then came home when Simon Pond hit into a fielder's choice.

Bedard ran into trouble in the second, when with one out he surrendered a double to Dee Brown and walked John Wilson. Edgar Gonzalez then laced a double down the rightfield line, plating Brown and Wilson to give Harrisburg a 2-1 lead.

All-Star Cory Morris relieved Bedard in the third and pitched the final seven innings. He gave up a run in the fourth and another in the fifth as the Senators padded their lead to 4-1.

Pond brought the Baysox within two on a mammoth home run in the sixth. He greeted Senators reliever Darrell Rasner with a blast that hit off the top of the high fence in center. It was Pond's tenth circuit clout of the year.

BAYSOX NOTES: Six players with major league experience were in the lineup tonight. In addition to Bedard and Day, Bergeron, Pond, Eugene Kingsale, and Harrisburg's Dee Brown have all played in the big leagues...Morris struck out seven batters in seven innings.

ON DECK: The Baysox will look to split the series with a win against the Senators, as the two teams take the field again on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. LHP Richard Stahl (0-3, 4.50) will go for his first win as a member of the Baysox as he squares off against RHP Armando Galaragga (0-0, 4.50).
