EL1 Binghamton Rumble Ponies

B-Mets come within three outs of sweep, settle for split

July 6, 2005 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

The Binghamton Mets got timely hitting from Mike Jacobs and superb starting pitching from Yusmeiro Petit and Orlando Roman, splitting a doubleheader with the New Hampshire Fisher Cats by winning the first game 4-2 but dropping the second one 6-2 at NYSEG Stadium Wednesday. Binghamton has lost five of six.

The B-Mets went on top early in Game One when Aarom Baldiris doubled home Wayne Lydon, who singled, in the first. However, Petit (3-2) led off the second by walking Rob Cosby and followed by serving up a two-run homer to Ron Davenport for a 2-1 New Hampshire lead. Those would be the only two runs Petit would give up, as he pitched his first complete game of the year, striking out a season-high 10. However, Jacobs tied the game for the B-Mets with a homer off New Hampshire's Josh Banks (7-7) to lead off the fourth and gave the B-Mets the lead for good with a double to center, scoring Baldiris. Two batters later, Jeff Duncan drove in Jacobs with a double of his own.

Orlando Roman started Game Two for the B-Mets (39-42), walking the bases loaded in the first, but settling down to pitch six shutout innings, striking out 10. He was staked to a 2-0 lead thanks to solo home runs by Victor Hall and Jacobs. Jacobs went 4 for 6 in the twinbill with two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored. Anderson Garcia came on in the seventh for Binghamton and allowed the first two New Hampshire (44-40) hitters to reach, walking Jason Waugh and committing a fielding error to put on Jose Umbria. Brad Hassey bunted both runners over and Miguel Negron followed with a base hit to left, scoring Waugh and cutting Binghamton's lead in half. After Negron stole second and Garcia (3-1) intentionally walked Ryan Roberts to load the bases, Clint Johnston hit a chopper down the rightfield line, scoring pinch-runner Raul Tablado and Negron for a 3-2 New Hampshire lead. Rob Cosby followed with a three-run homer to left for the final margin of victory. Thursday, the B-Mets wrap up their four-game series with New Hampshire. Bryan Edwards (2-2, 3.01) will start for Binghamton against New Hampshire's Jamie Vermilyea (3-2, 2.05). Game time is 7:00 from NYSEG Stadium with the Horizon's Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show kicking off the radio broadcast at 6:50 on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
