Portland 4 vs Everett 3

January 9, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release

EVERETT, Wash. - Jake Gricius, awarded his second goal of the game on scrum at the net with 38.8 seconds left in regulation, was the difference to snap a late tie and help the Portland Winterhawks sneak past the Everett Silvertips, 4-3 before a crowd of 7,019 in downtown Everett on Saturday in WHL action.

Matt Fonteyne, whose 20 goals helped him reach the 20-goal plateau for the second straight year, buried a pair of power play goals to help rally the Tips out of a 3-0 deficit. Patrick Bajkov and Kevin Davis each collected a pair of assists for the Silvertips, who dropped back to back games for the first time since November.

UP NEXT: The Tips end three games in three days in downtown Everett's Angel of the Winds Arena on Sunday, 4:05 p.m. (Fox Sports 1380 / FM 95.3) against the Victoria Royals. Doors open at 3pm with the first 1,500 fans receiving a commemorative 15th Anniversary Pennant. Tickets are on sale at www.everettsilvertips.com/tickets.

Both teams played through a riveting first period with Connor Dewar barely missing on a breakaway off the post, and Gricius opening the scoring with 2:19 to play for a 1-0 lead. Just 17 seconds later, Portland struck again on a Ryan Hughes shot that tumbled through traffic and caromed into the net off Dustin Wolf.

Ilijah Colina finished a three-way sequence with a power play goal at the crease at 1:39 of the second, putting the Tips in trouble with a 3-0 deficit. The hole seemed to rally the Silvertips, whose power play goal by Wyatte Wylie ended a scoring drought of over five periods at 8:11 of the second frame on his wrist shot from the right point.

Fonteyne then finished Bajkov's cross-ice pass to the left circle just 1:38 later for a one goal deficit, and Fonteyne turned downtown Everett into bedlam by tying the game on the Tips third power play goal of the evening, 7:59 into the third period on a wrister between the circles.

As the teams battled into the final minute, the Winterhawks manufactured a scrum at the net. Mason Mannek and Gricius continued to jam at a loose puck, eventually with the puck tumbling in the air over an outstretched Wolf and a collection of bodies at the crease for the improbable go-ahead goal.

Cole Kehler made 36 saves for the win. Wolf stopped 34 shots.
