Prince Albert, SK - The newest addition for the Prince Albert Raiders (15-17-6-2) made an impact in his first game with the club.
Kody McDonald, who arrived an hour before game time after travelling from Prince George, BC all day, scored the overtime winner to lift the Raiders to a 2-1 victory over the Red Deer Rebels (10-21-7-2) on Saturday night at the Art Hauser Centre.
The 19-year-old from Lethbridge now has 20 goals on the season.
The Raider took control of the game early on, dominating the shot clock in the first period. The home side outshot Red Deer 17-0 in the opening 20 minutes, but were unable to solve goaltender Ethan Anders.
In the second, Vojtech Budik - another weary traveller - got the Raiders on the board first. Arriving earlier in the day after representing the Czech Republic at the 2018 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, Budik took a pass from Jordy Stallard in the slot and wristed it past Anders to put the Raiders up 1-0.
Late in the frame, the Rebels equalized. Reese Johnson broke in on the left wing and snapped a shot past goaltender Curtis Meger with 27 seconds left in the period.
Both goaltenders stood tall in the third period to earn each of their team's a point. The best save belonged to Meger. With the Rebels breaking in on a two-on-one, Meger slid to his left and got his glove on Dawson Barteaux's attempt to keep it a 1-1 game.
In overtime, Meger stood tall again. On another two-on-one rush, Meger got enough of Johnson's shot to keep it out of the net and keep the game going.
That gave McDonald the opportunity to play hero for his new team. The Raiders worked possession around the zone to McDonald, who was positioned at the top of the left faceoff circle. He one-timed a shot past Anders to end the game with his first as a Raider.
Meger made 18 saves to earn his first win since November 25 in Moose Jaw. Anders stopped 33 shots in the loss for Red Deer.
It's a quick turnaround for the Raiders as they head to Regina on Sunday afternoon to take on the Pats at the Brandt Centre. Puck drop is 4 p.m.
The next Raiders' home games are next weekend, beginning on Friday night against the Swift Current Broncos. On Saturday, the Moose Jaw Warriors visit the Art Hauser Centre. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
