WHL Announces Weekly Award Winners

January 9, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release

Calgary, Alta. - The Western Hockey League announced today that Swift Current Broncos forward Matteo Gennaro has been named WHL On the Run Player of the Week for the week ending January 7, 2018.

Gennaro recorded 10 points (7G-3A) in five games as the Broncos remained locked in a fierce battle for the East Division title while also remaining second in the competitive Eastern Conference.

After the Broncos opened their weekend with a loss to the Saskatoon Blades, Gennaro recorded four straight multi-point efforts. During a victory over the Kootenay ICE, Gennaro recorded a goal and two assists, scoring the game-winner in the third period and earning first star honours for the game.

In a 3-2 overtime loss to the Brandon Wheat Kings Friday, Gennaro scored both goals for the Broncos, earning second star honours in the game. The 6-foot-3, 198-pound overage free agent from St. Albert, Alta. stepped up his game in a pair of weekend games, scoring a pair of goals Saturday at home to knock off the Regina Pats, getting credit for another game-winner, once again finding his way into the game's three stars as the first star.

Wrapping up his week with a 5-1 win against the Red Deer Rebels, Gennaro tallied a pair of goals and an assist, once again scoring the game-winner and earning first star honours for the game. Overall, eight of Gennaro's 10 points this week came at even strength.

Acquired in a November trade with the Calgary Hitmen, Gennaro has increased his production with the Broncos, tallying 29 points (14G-15A) in 17 games with his new club and 54 points (28G-26A) in 39 games overall. Originally drafted by the Prince Albert Raiders in the second round, 41st overall, of the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, Gennaro has played in 310 career WHL games, recording 223 points (110G-113A). He also has 29 power play goals, five short-handed goals and 14 game-winners.

The Broncos return to action Friday, January 12 (7:00 p.m. CST) when they head north to battle the Prince Albert Raiders at the Art Hauser Centre.
