Dayton Bombers News Release
Dayton, OH- This was the one the Bombers were waiting for. After being on the road for almost a full three weeks, they returned home for a rematch with the Wheeling Nailers.
The last time the two teams met, the Nailers Curtiss Patrick gave Bombers defenseman Jeremy Van Hoof a few stitches and a concussion that would force him to miss six games. Everyone that was at that game knew the next time the Nailers came to town it was time to throw down, and that's exactly what they did :02 seconds into the game.
Right off the face off both players dropped their gear and got it out of their systems, but because of that Van Hoof accidentally hit one of the linesmen in the process of the scrap and received a 5:00 major and a game misconduct for aggressive conduct. On the ensuing power play the Nailers scored two goals, both by Sean Collins at the 1:12 and 7:59 marks of the first.
Even though the Bombers out shot the Nailers 16-11 in the first they would trail 2-0 after one. The Nailers made it 3-0 almost midway through the second and guess who (Curtiss Patrick) got the goal. Less than five minutes later the Bombers cut the lead back down to two.
Tim Konsorada saw teammates Scott Cameron and Jeff Szwez breaking out of the Bombers zone, Konorada (26) then made a perfect pass to allow Cameron and Szwez to set up a two-on-one breakaway. Cameron (39) made a perfect pass right to the tape of Szwez, who drew Nailers starter Andy Franck out of the net, put the puck to the backhand and slid it right into the Nailers net to score his team leading 25th goal of the season at the 12:19 mark to make it 3-1, and that's how it remained after two periods of play.
For most of the third period, both teams whether they intended to or not, played a lot of dump and chase and not much offense was generated until the last five minutes of the game. The Bombers (still trailing 3-1) knew they needed to at least get to overtime to try to snap their current six game losing slide.
With less than two minutes remaining, just when the Nailers thought it was over, the Konsorada, Szwez, and Cameron line did it again.
This time it was Konsorada (14) with a sensational snap shot over the far shoulder of Franck right up under the crossbar off a one-timer at the 1:18 mark to cut it to 3-2, assists to Szwez (22) and Cameron (40). Following the goal the Bombers took a timeout so that line could get some rest and have a chance to tie it up with just over a minute remaining in regulation. Cameron won the draw at center and the Bombers pulled starter David Currie for the extra attacker.
A number of times in the Wheeling zone the Bombers had to hold the puck at the blue line and thanks to Tyson Teplitsky and Mark Flood they did to give themselves a chance but, the Nailers stood their ground, especially Franck in the waning seconds and the Bombers fell just short 3-2.
The Bombers continue their 15th Anniversary season vs. Reading on Saturday night at 7:05pm at the EJ Nutter Center, as they take on the first place Reading Royals. The game can be heard on 980 (am) Homer the Sports Animal or on line at www.daytonbombers.com. Dayton Bombers Hockey, celebrating 15 years of fun.
