Pitching prevails in victory

Hickory, NC - Casey Erickson, Diego Moreno and Noah Krol combined to toss a four-hitter at L.P. Frans Stadium on Saturday night as the West Virginia Power snapped a four game losing streak with a 3-1 victory over the Hickory Crawdads.

Erickson started the game for West Virginia and allowed just a run over five strong innings while striking out six in the process. Diego Moreno took over in the sixth inning and allowed just a hit over three scoreless frames with six strikeouts as well, and Noah Krol tossed a scoreless ninth inning to slam the door on the Crawdads.

Starling Marte belted a triple with one out in the third inning and scored moments later on a passed ball. The Crawdads plated their lone run just a half-inning later on Eric Fry's solo homer. West Virginia plated a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning to pull away. Jeremy Farrell smacked a one out double and scored on Greg Picart's base hit through the right side of the infield. Josue Peley reached on a fielder's choice later in the inning which allowed Austin McClune to score.

Erickson (3-1) continued to dominate South Atlantic League batters with his fantastic five inning performance. While he's 3-1 with West Virginia, on the year he improved to 7-4, which includes his time with the Charleston Riverdogs. The save for Krol was his first of the season. Neil Ramirez (3-5) allowed three runs on seven hits over four innings and was tagged with the loss.

West Virginia improved to 47-61 overall, and 20-18 in the second half after the victory, while the Crawdads fell to 54-56 overall and 21-20 in the second half after the loss. Greg Picart and Tony Sanchez paced the Power with two hit a piece. Austin McClune went 0-for-2 to bring his hitting streak to an end at 12 games but walked twice to extend his on base streak to 16 games. Robbie Grossman was also held hitless and saw his hitting streak end at six games but walked two times to bring his on base streak to 19 games. Starling Marte's triple extended his hitting streak to 21 games and his on base streak to 32 games.

West Virginia will continue the four game series with the Hickory Crawdads at L.P. Frans Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Power will start right hander Hunter Strickland (1-1, 1.64) and the Crawdads will counter with right hander Wilfredo Boscan (5-6, 3.24). The first pitch will be delivered at 3:00 PM.
