Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - Dom Duggan's one-out, sixth inning double down the first base line gave the Augusta GreenJackets a lead they wouldn't relinquish, holding on for a 10-7 win over the Charleston RiverDogs. With the win, the Jackets take four of five from the Dogs and finish the second half's longest homestand with a 6-3 record.
Augusta led early with three runs in the first on Andy D'Alessio's two-run double and Mike Loberg's RBI single but Aaron King - who struck out two in a perfect first inning - did not retire any of the seven batters he faced in the second. He allowed six runs on six hits and a walk before being lifted in favor of Kyle Woodruff. The big blow was Taylor Grote's two-run home run, from which King never seemed to recover. He walked the next hitter, and then allowed hits to the four that followed.
Little by little, the GreenJackets crawled back into contention. They got one in the third on a Loberg groundout and pulled to within one in the fifth on a sacrifice fly from Loberg, who knocked in three.
Things turned around off Charleston reliever Andrew Brackman (1-12) in the sixth. The Jackets put two men on with a hit and an error before Charlie Culberson sacrificed the runners to second and third ahead of the Duggan go-ahead double. Duggan came in to score on Brackman's wild pitch to push the Augusta lead to two at 8-6.
Woodruff (3-1) came out of the bullpen to lay down the law for the GreenJackets, allowing two hits in 5.1 scoreless innings with four strikeouts in his longest outing this season. Ryan Verdugo struck out three in 1.2 innings of one-hit baseball after that.
The GreenJackets added two more in the eighth for good measure and held on while Chris Wilson allowed two hits and a run in the ninth before sealing the 10-7 victory.
With Sunday off for travel, the GreenJackets embark on their longest trip distance-wise this season - an eight-game road trip to Lake County and Hagerstown. In the opener, Orlando Yntema (0-1, 7.20) will face Lake County's Danny Salazar (4-4, 4.71) on Monday night. First pitch comes at 7:05 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on WRDW AM 1630 and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com. You may purchase seats by calling 706-922-WINS or online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
