Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, NC - Greensboro made a pair of costly errors in the eighth inning on Saturday night at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium to help Kannapolis to an ugly 8-6 win.
Daniel Pertusati and Smelin Perez each made critical miscues in the eighth, as the Intimidators plated three runs for the come-from-behind win. Perez' throwing error was especially devastating, directly leading to the two go-ahead runs. Jon Gilmore appeared to hit into an inning-ending ground out, but Perez sailed the throw allowing two runs to cross.
The Grasshoppers had just gone ahead with two runs of their own in the top of the eighth off of reliever Kevin Asselin (5-3). Instead, Asselin earned the victory after Dan Remenowsky stuck out three in the ninth inning for his 19th save of the season.
Stephen Sauer had an up-and-down night in his start for Kannapolis. The right-hander breezed through the first three innings, before allowing four runs in the fourth. Robert Taylor's first home run of the season gave Greensboro the lead at 4-2. But Sauer settled after the rough frame, going seven innings and departing with his team leading, 5-4.
Kannapolis regained the advantage with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Gilmore had a clutch two-RBI double to put Sauer in a position to win the contest.
The night featured five lead changes, with the final three runs coming off of Grasshoppers closer Pete Andrelczyk (2-5). He took the loss despite not allowing an earned run.
The victory extended the Intimidators winning streak to five games and pushed the club's overall record to 63-48, a season-best 15 games above .500.
