CHARLESTON, SC - Augusta's Josh Mazzola connected for three hits and scored three runs as the GreenJackets bashed the RiverDogs, 10-7, in South Atlantic League action Saturday night in front of 3,365 fans at Augusta's Lake Olmstead Stadium.
With the victory, the GreenJackets win the series 4-1 and jump to 25-17 in the second half (60-51 overall) while the RiverDogs drop to 16-26 (55-57 overall).
Augusta seized a 3-0 lead in the first when Dom Duggan walked and advanced to second on Mazzola's infield single. Andy D'Alessio lined a two-run double to center that drove home Duggan and Mazzola. Mike Loberg laced a RBI single up the middle that delivered D'Alessio for the game's third run.
The RiverDogs erupted to a 6-3 advantage in the second when Melky Mesa cracked a leadoff single and then Taylor Grote blasted a two-run shot over the right field wall his fourth home run of the season. Addison Maruszak added a walk and advanced to second on Garrison Lassiter's single. Neall French followed with a RBI single plated Maruszak while Lassiter moved to second. Following a single by Jeff Farnham that loaded the bases, Jose Pirela lined a two-run double to left that knocked home Lassiter and French while Farnham scampered into third. Abraham Almonte lifted a sacrifice fly to center that drove home Farnham for the inning's sixth run.
The GreenJackets cut into Charleston's lead in the third when Mazzola singled to center, advanced to third on D'Alessio's double and scored on a groundout to make the score 6-4.
Augusta continued to chip away at the RiverDogs advantage in the fifth to make the score 6-5 when Mazzola doubled, moved to third on D'Alessio's single and trotted home on a sacrifice fly by Loberg.
The GreenJackets reclaimed an 8-6 advantage in the sixth on a two-run double by Duggan. Duggan would score after he stole third and scampered home on a wild pitch.
Augusta tacked on two runs in the eighth to make the score 10-6 on a balk called on RiverDogs reliever Manny Banuelos and a RBI single by Francisco Peguero.
The RiverDogs mounted a final rally in the ninth to scratch a run when Farnham singled, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on Almonte's RBI single that made the score 10-7.
GreenJackets reliever Kyle Woodruff (3-1) earned the victory after he tossed 5.1 frames of scoreless relief as he held the RiverDogs to two hits and four strikeouts.
RiverDogs reliever Andrew Brackman (1-12) suffered the defeat after he was charged with three runs - two earned - on two hits and one strikeout.
Charleston starter Cory Arbiso received a no-decision after he allowed five earned runs on 10 hits and one walk while striking out two in 5.0 innings.
Augusta starter Aaron King also was handed a no-decision after he tossed 1.0 frame and was charged with six earned runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two.
Paced by Farnham's three base knocks the RiverDogs registered 11 hits while the duo of Mazzola and D'Alessio each tallied three of the GreenJackets 13 hits.
After a rare off day the RiverDogs return to the Lowcountry to begin an eight-game homestand beginning with a four-game set with the Delmarva Shorebirds, an affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. With the series opener set for Monday at 7:05 p.m., Charleston manager Torre Tyson is scheduled to pitch right-hander Jairo Heredia (0-1, 2.77 ERA) while Delmarva skipper Orlando Gomez plans to counter with righty Oliver Drake (7-6, 3.47 ERA)
