Pitchers Shine, Baez Collects Clutch Hit in Sens Win

Edgardo Baez drove in Josh Johnson in the top of the ninth inning to bring home the go-ahead run, and the Harrisburg Senators defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 2-1 on Wednesday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium in New Hampshire.  The game had been tied at one since the second inning, as both teams received excellent pitching.  With the win, the Senators (73-63) maintained the lead in the playoff race against Bowie, either by half a game or 1.5 games, depending on Bowie's result against Altoona.

Jack Spradlin (1-1) picked up the win for the Senators, despite retiring just one batter: the final batter of the eighth inning.  The Fisher Cats put runners in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth, but Cole Kimball shut the door to earn his eleventh save.  Vince Bongiovanni (6-6) pitched the final three innings for New Hampshire, gave up the winning hit to Baez, and took the loss as a result.  The Senators had just four hits in the game, including two doubles from Johnson.  He reached in the top of the ninth on a leadoff double, and also doubled in the first inning.  The other two hits came from Baez and Stephen Lombardozzi.

Johnson scored both runs for the Senators, including the first run of the game in the top of the first.  After his double, he advanced to third on a throwing error by Fisher Cat starter B.J. LaMura, and then scored on a groundout by Jesus Valdez.  New Hampshire got its run in the second inning, when Ricardo Nanita drove in David Cooper with an RBI single.  Cooper had two hits in the ballgame for the Fisher Cats, who had six as a team.  Five of their hits came against Senators starter Tanner Roark, who turned in a great performance with six and a third innings pitched and just one run allowed.

The Senators and Fisher Cats play the final game of their four-game series on Thursday evening at 6:35, with LHP Aaron Thompson (4-13, 5.89) starting for the Senators.  He is opposed by RHP Kyle Drabek (14-9, 2.89) of New Hampshire.  Radio coverage of the game begins at 6:20, on 1460 AM The Ticket and www.senatorsbaseball.com.
