Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Salomon Manriquez clubbed a homer and drove in half of Binghamton's runs in a 6-5 victory over Portland Wednesday night at Hadlock Field. Manuel Alvarez secured the outcome with 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, including stranding the tying run on base in the eighth and the ninth.

After falling behind early in the first two games of the series, Binghamton (65-71) cracked the scoreboard first Wednesday. With two outs in the first, Josh Satin took Sea Dogs' starter Alex Wilson deep over the Maine Monster in left for a solo homer, pushing the B-Mets on top 1-0.

Wilson found himself in trouble again in the second inning. Manriquez ripped a one-out double to right-center to start a rally. Raul Reyes joined him aboard with a walk and Brahiam Maldonado loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. Jose Coronado followed and sprayed an 0-2 offering from Wilson into left for a base hit, moving everyone up a station. Jordany Valdespin closed out the scoring in the frame with a sacrifice fly to center, making it 3-0.

Portland (65-71) tallied in the second off starter Dylan Owen. Nate Spears blooped a double off the glove of Maldonado in left with one away. A wild pitch advanced him to third and he scored on Jorge Padron's single to center, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

Manriquez put the B-Mets in a commanding position in the third. After Wilson walked the first two hitters of the inning and struck out Eric Campbell, Manriquez clobbered a 1-2 fastball from Wilson, sending it out to left-center for his second homer of the season to up the lead to five, 6-1.

Wilson exited to the loss after three innings of work. He allowed six runs on five hits for his fifth loss with Portland.

The Sea Dogs managed a second run off Owen in the fourth. The right-hander walked the first two hitters of the inning. Luis Exposito followed with a chopper to third. Campbell fielded it cleanly and threw high to second, allowing the runner to slide in safe. Valdespin tried to get Exposito and first, but threw the ball away, allowing a run to score on the botched double-play chance.

Owen exited in the fifth inning, an out short of qualifying for the win. He hurled 4 2/3 innings and allowed two runs, one earned on three hits. Owen walked three and struck out five in the no-decision.

Erik Turgeon replaced the righty and got out of a two-on, two-out jam in the fifth. He tossed two innings of one-run work to earn his first Double-A win.

Portland narrowed the gap to three in the seventh courtesy of an RBI single from Ryan Lavarnway.

John Lujan allowed the Sea Dogs to get within a run in the eighth. After walking Exposito to lead off the frame, Padron singled to center. With Ryan Khoury at the plate, Lujan uncorked a wild pitch, allowing both runners to reach scoring position. Khoury struck out eventually, but Juan Carlos Linares doubled down the third-base line to plate both runners, cutting the lead to one, 6-5.

Alvarez was summoned to replace Lujan in the eighth and stranded Linares by retiring the next two hitters.

In the ninth, Alvarez allowed a one-out single to Lavarnway, but sat down the next two to nail down his eighth save in 10 chances.

Coronado contributed a 2-for-5 night to extend his season-long hitting streak to seven games.

Binghamton will seek a split in the four-game set in the finale Thursday at 6:00 PM. RHP Eddie Kunz (7-7, 5.14) will start against RHP Blake Maxwell (6-0, 2.32) of Portland. The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 5:45 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
