Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release
ERIE, PA - A strong pitching performance carried the Erie SeaWolves to a third straight victory over the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 4-1, on Wednesday night at Jerry Uht Park. With the victory, the SeaWolves effectively claimed the four-game series over Richmond.
Pitching dominated the early portion of the ballgame, but Erie got on the board first in the third inning against Squirrels' right-hander Felix Romero. Brent Wyatt lifted a lead-off triple to straight-away center field and scored a batter later on a sacrifice fly to right field from Brandon Douglas.
Erie right-hander Brayan Villarreal was in control through five innings. He shut out the Squirrels on two hits, while striking out seven.
However, Tyler La Torre led off the sixth inning and provided the only blemish for Villarreal with a solo-home run to left field that tied the ballgame, 1-1. Villarreal finished the inning and departed to a no-decision. All told, he allowed the lone run on four hits, walked two and struck out seven.
Romero also left to a no-decision after six innings. He allowed a single run on five hits, walked two and struck out five.
Erie grabbed the lead back with an unearned run against right-handed reliever Daryl Maday in the seventh. John Murrian led off with a single and was replaced on the base paths by Alden Carrithers on a fielder's choice. Carrithers swiped second base and advanced to third base on a throwing error from La Torre. Douglas brought in the go-ahead run with an infield-single tapped just to the left of the mound.
Erie capped the scoring with two more runs against Maday in the eighth inning. The inning was highlighted by Murrian, who pulled a two-run double up the third-base line. Maday (9-8) was tagged with the loss for the Squirrels, conceding three runs - two earned - over an inning-and-a-third.
Left-hander Matt Hoffman (1-2) worked 2 2/3 hitless innings of relief for the win, handing it off to right-hander Cory Hamilton with two outs in the ninth. Hamilton nailed down the win, flying out Clay Timpner to left field to end the ballgame and earn his first save of the season.
The finale of the four-game series and the final road game of the season for the Squirrels is scheduled at 7:05 PM on Thursday night at Jerry Uht Park. RHP Mike MacDonald (4-8, 4.05) will make the start for Richmond against LHP Jon Kibler (4-6, 6.19) for Erie.
