Richmond Flying Squirrels News Release

ERIE, PA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, are pleased to announce that OF Darren Ford has been recalled by the Giants, effectively becoming the first Flying Squirrel in franchise history to be promoted to the Major Leagues. Ford, 24, will fly from Erie, PA, to San Francisco, CA, on Wednesday, joining the Giants in San Francisco prior to their game against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night.

A native of Vineland, NJ, the speedy outfielder appeared in 114 games with the Flying Squirrels during their inaugural season in Richmond, VA. He hit .251 (116-463) with the Squirrels, notching 5 HRs and 40 RBIs. His 9 triples pace the Eastern League, while his 37 stolen bases place him second in league.

Ford was added to the Giants' 40-man roster during the off-season. He was acquired by the Giants in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2008, joining San Francisco along with LHP Steve Hammond in exchange for INF Ray Durham. He was originally selected by the Brewers in the 18th round of the 2004 draft out of Chipola Junior College.

Due to Ford being on the Disabled List prior to his promotion, the Squirrels remain at the Eastern League maximum of 24 active players. Six players are currently on the Disabled List, although none are currently with the club.

The Flying Squirrels return to The Diamond to close out their inaugural season in Richmond on Friday, September 3rd. They will host the Bowie Baysox (Baltimore Orioles) in a four-game series from September 3rd- 6th. Tickets are available for the final four home games for the Squirrels and can be purchased by visiting the Flying Squirrels Ticket Office at The Diamond, calling (804) 359-FUNN (3866) or by logging on to SquirrelsBaseball.com.
