Providence Bruins News Release

PORTLAND, M.E. - The Portland Pirates clung to their Calder Cup Playoffs life with a 3-2 win over the Providence Bruins at Cross Insurance Arena on Saturday. Providence can now finish either sixth or seventh in the Eastern Conference, and controls its own destiny in Sunday's season finale.

Eric Selleck had an early try on Jeremy Smith at the far doorstep, but Smith was able to hold on. It was one of many good scoring chances for both teams in the first. Zack Phillips missed a backdoor chance that came near him on a rebound for the best Providence chance in the opening frame. Tyler Gaudet put the home team up for good with a goal off of the far post after the rebound bounced to him at 10:21.

Portland added to its lead in the second on two occasions. Lucas Lessio ranged across the slot, sent a forehand wrister toward the cage, and Laurent Dauphin lit the lamp with his first professional goal as he hit the rebound in from the right side of the slot. Tommy Cross cut the deficit in half with a power play slapper from the left point, with Justin Florek screening Pirates goalie Louis Domingue. Just more than two minutes later, Alexandre Bolduc added a shorthanded goal that took the wind out of the P-Bruins' sails.

Rob Flick added a goal of his own in the third period with a shot from the left point that went over Domingue's left shoulder at 15:59. It was Flick's 18th goal of the season, and second of the weekend. The Bruins had almost two minutes of 6-on-5 time with Smith pulled, but were unable to capitalize.

The Pirates need a point against the Worcester Sharks on Sunday to clinch the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Providence remains in sixth place. Worcester is still one point back, and holds the tiebreaker over the Bruins. The Baby B's cap off their 2014-2015 regular season campaign with their final home game on Sunday, hosting the Manchester Monarchs at 3:05pm.
