Portland Pirates News Release
Portland, Maine - Kyle Rank scored twice to lead the Portland Pirates to a 7-1 win over the Worcester Sharks in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 4,740 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Derek Whitmore, Mark Mancari and Tyler Ennis each added a goal and an assist to the Pirates attack while single scores went to T.J. Brennan and Travis Turnbull. Matt Generous added three assists. The Pirates improved to 20-15-5-2 with the win and evened the Unum Challenge at three wins apiece in the eight-game season series between the two teams.
Brandon Mashinter collected the lone Sharks goal, who dropped their second straight and are now 24-14-1-2 on the season.
Whitmore scored the lone goal of the opening period, striking for his eighth of the year midway through the period.
The Pirates jumped out quickly in the second as Mancari struck on the power play in the opening two minutes to give the home side a 2-0 advantage. Brennan (with his second in as many games) and Rank followed with two goals in 21 seconds to make it 4-0 nothing and chase Worcester starter Alex Stalock. Mashinter answered just 29 seconds later to get the Sharks on the board but Turnbull quickly restored the Portland four-goal lead heading into the third.
Rank, with his second of the game, and Ennis rounded out the scoring as the Pirates matched their biggest offensive output of the season.
The Sharks out shot the Pirates 34-28 in the game as Jhonas Enroth posted the win.
Alex Stalock started for the Sharks but was chased after the Pirates went up 4-0 in the second. He allowed four goals on 13 shots and was replace by Tyson Sexsmith, who allowed three goals on 15 shots.
The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were 1. Rank; 2. Generous and 3. Whitmore.
