Binghamton Senators News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The B-Sens entered tonight's match trailing the visiting Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the Eastern Division standings by only six points. They looked to narrow that gap and continue to claw their way into Calder Cup playoff contention for the first time in four seasons.
Goaltender Chris Holt went on to stop all 28 shots he faced for his third shutout of the season, as the Senators upended the Penguins 3-0 in front of a hometown crowd of 3,528.
Binghamton struck first at the 15:07 mark of the first period as Denis Hamel fed Max Gratchev a breakaway pass as he exited the penalty box after serving a minor for slashing. Gratchev then burned Pens' goaltender Brad Thiessen with a lightning-quick deke to put the Senators on the board 1-0.
The score remained the same until 17:07 of the second period when, on the power play, Hamel hit defenseman Derek Smith in the Penguins' crease with a pass. Smith was unable to light the lamp but Ryan Keller buried the rebound to give the B-Sens a two goal advantage, scoring his first goal since a Nov. 21 match versus Albany.
Keller added insurance with his second rebound goal, and third point of the game at 9:44 of the third. This time flipping an unsuccessful Geoff Kinrade shot past Thiessen to give the Senators a commanding 3-0 lead.
That would be all the offense the B-Sens needed as they went on to snap a modest two game losing skid. Binghamton however would end the game on a bit of a sour note as AHL All-Star Keller left the game with six minutes left in the third with an apparent lower body injury and did not return.
The Senators return to the ice tomorrow night as they host the Atlantic Division's Springfield Falcons at 7:05pm. Tickets are $17.75 for side seating, and $16.75 for end seating. Fans can purchase tickets online at www.ticketmaster.com, by phone by calling 1-800-745-3000, or in person at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena box office
