SAUGET, IL - After sitting through the past five games without a homerun, the Florence Freedom used one to down the Gateway Grizzlies 4-3 Sunday night at GCS Ballpark.

With the Freedom trailing 3-2 in the sixth inning, Justin Pickett, who had not homered since hitting his third on May 29, hit a frozen rope out to right field with a man on to put the Freedom ahead 4-3.

Gateway scored all three of their runs in the fourth inning, two of which were unearned against Freedom starter Everett Saul.

Stephen Holdren took one deep to lead off the fourth, but Saul retired the next two batters on ground balls. The Freedom could have gotten their starter out of the inning on two separate occasions but booted the next two groundballs to extend the inning.

Two RBI singles followed and Gateway took a 3-2 lead before Pickett's heroics in the sixth.

Errors have been the Freedom's biggest achilles this season as the two in the fourth gave them 31 in their first 16 games.

Not to be held back, the Freedom pitching staff overcame as Saul lasted into the seventh to pick up his third win of the season and improve to 3-0. Demetrius Banks went 1.2 innings of shutout ball before turning it over to Jonathan Miller to nail down the save in the ninth, his second.

The Freedom (10-6) completed their season series with the Grizzlies (6-10) as they went 4-2 against the men from Gateway. Florence has the day off Monday before going on the road for three against the Midwest Sliders starting Tuesday night.
